Book Review: “The 7 Minute Rotator Cuff Solution” by Jerry Robinson and Joseph Horrigan

Jerry Robinson, a renowned fitness expert, brings his extensive knowledge of physical fitness to the table, while Joseph Horrigan, a respected sports medicine professional, adds his medical expertise to this collaborative effort.

I was an early fan of Jerry Robinson’s fitness company, Health for Life, back in the 80s and subscribed to some of the programs he offered. Years later, I tore my rotator cuff and recalled the book and its praises.

The book, published in 1990 by Health for Life, presents a quick, simple exercise program designed to help prevent or rehabilitate rotator cuff injuries. It’s a compact guide at 64 pages, but it packs a punch with its content.

Robinson and Horrigan have done a commendable job of breaking down complex anatomy and medical concepts into understandable terms. The content is accurate and relevant, providing readers with a solid understanding of the rotator cuff, its function, common injuries, and treatment options.  In my experience, it is still the best collection of preventative and rehabilitative rotator cuff exercises I have come across.

The exercises outlined in the book are its core strength. They are well-described, easy to follow, and can be performed in just seven minutes a day. This makes the program accessible to those with busy schedules who may not have time for lengthy rehabilitation sessions. The authors claim these exercises can significantly impact shoulder health and mobility, and based on the scientific backing of the principles they apply, this claim holds water.

Surprisingly, its age is not a factor; being over three decades old, it leverages the best exercises still in use today. Additionally, the book does a good job explaining the exercises, the detailed illustrations may make it easier some readers to visualize the movements. It would be beneficial to the reader to supplement this with a youtube search of the specific exercises mentioned for proper form.

Overall, “The 7 Minute Rotator Cuff Solution” provides a valuable resource for fitness enthusiasts, athletes, healthcare professionals, and individuals experiencing shoulder pain. While it is now out of print, it still remains in high demand.  It offers a practical, time-efficient approach to maintaining shoulder health and managing rotator cuff issues. It can definitely serve as an informative guide for those interested in understanding and taking care of their rotator cuff health.
